RENEWABLES TARGETS SEMINAR - 30th January 2004
Cambrensis’ Renewables and Hydrogen Contact Group met at Middle
Temple Hall, London, on Friday 30th January 2004.
Richard
Brook, Director of Business Development, New and Renewable Energy
Centre, Blyth, Northumberland reviewed the capacity of different renewables technologies to contribute
to achieving the UK government’s renewable targets. His presentation
focussed specifically on the contribution from offshore and onshore
wind, the potential for biomass and the future prospects for wave and
tidal power.
Melville,
Haggard, Chairman of Impax Capital Corporation Limited spoke about
the economic aspects of different renewable technologies,
and the implications of these for the government’s renewables
targets. This vitally important area included the sources of funding
for investments in renewables, expected rates of return, and factors
which constrained or discouraged investments.
Bronwen
Northmore, Director of Coal and New Energy Technologies at the UK
Department of Trade and
Industry gave an informal response to the first two speakers
reflecting current UK government energy policy. Her presentation
covered the target
of 60% reduction by 2050, and the recent extension of the government’s
Renewables Obligation for electricity generated from renewable sources
to 15.4% by 2015/16.
William
Wilson of Cambrensis, gave a short round-up of some recent developments
in the USA.
