CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE BRIEFING - 06 December 2005

On 1 December 2005 Cambrensis gave an 'Update on Carbon Capture and Storage'. This followed on from Cambrensis' seminar on Carbon Sequestration in 2003, and was particularly timely, given the commitment to CCS in the government's Carbon Abatement Technologies programme, and its interest in this technology in the context of the new Energy Review.

Those attending the Middle Temple for this seminar included senior representatives from -

Johnson Matthey
Rolls Royce
DTI
DfT
Marches Energy Agency
Marine Current Turbines
Centrica
Cambrensis
University College London
British Geological Survey

William Wilson, Director, Cambrensis Ltd gave a review of the new IPCC Special Report on Carbon Capture and Storage, and developments such as the UK government's Carbon Abatement Technology report. He discussed some of the main legal and regulatory issues, and the potential for CCS in emerging countries such as China and India, using examples from Cambrensis seminars in June on UK energy policy and in September on energy and the environment in China, India and Brazil.

Professor David Slater, Director, Cambrensis Ltd was asked to explain the difference between Pre-combustion, Post Combustion and Oxyfuel combustion, and their relative importance.

Nicholas Aluko, Senior Policy Advisor, DTI Carbon Abatement Technologies, gave a short review of relevant government policy in support of CCS and CAT technologies, and answered questions.

Dr Andy Chadwick of the British Geological Survey gave a very detailed, authoritative and lavishly illustrated presentation, drawing widely on his own and the BGS's extensive experience of current Carbon Capture and Storage schemes around the world, and there was much discussion of the conclusions.
