“ HYDROGEN AND THE PUBLIC: RISK, SAFETY AND PUBLIC PERCEPTION ”

The seminar will consider whether issues of risk and safety are being properly explored and explained to the public by the growing hydrogen industry. It will investigate whether there may be a growing gap between the discussions of technical specialists on the one hand and public perceptions on the other.
Dr David Slater, Director of Cambrensis Ltd and Dr Phil Bowen, Reader - Institute of Sustainability, Energy and Environmental Management, Cardiff University, will consider some of the aspects of current debates on the public and science. They will look at the current understanding and interpretation of the Hindenburg disaster, and the ways in which the scientific and safety issues are represented to the public.
Peter Newboult, Senior Engineer for the Future Energy Solutions Group of Air Products, will give a presentation on their ‘KnowH2ow’ hydrogen safety training courses, and what these can offer.
Tanya O’Garra of Imperial College London and Research Assistant for EPMG, will report on some of the groundbreaking work which she is undertaking at Imperial College for BP on public perception and hydrogen.
